Teen's Key - empowering vulnerable young girls
What an inspiration it was to meet Bowie Lam, Founder and Rachel Chow of Teen's Key - Young Women Development Network to learn more about their meaningful services to vulnerable young girls. Founded in 2014, Teen's Key is a Charitable Choice beneficiary that campaigns for sexual and reproductive health and rights through advocacy and services to at-risk teens.
What I learned
What I learned
- Without understanding the risks involved, girls (some as young as 11 years old) are being lured online into unwanted physical encounters
- Body image, lack of confidence, family problems and financial crisis increase the risk factor
- There is a growing demand for at-risk teen girls who seek counselling
What they do
- Teen's Key provides 24 hour hotline/messaging service, crisis intervention, counselling, testing and a drop-in centre for vulnerable girls
- Support up to 50 new cases per month
- Offer school workshops to educate teens about consent, respect, body image and sexual health - prevention is key
- Conduct regular community outreach to identify and connect with high risk teens
What they need
- Donations to provide more counselling services to young girls. Donate here!
- Skills based volunteers to support their education outreach programme
- Board Director and Advisory Committee members (Finance/Marketing background preferred)
