SPCA - 16,000 lonely animals, $100 million, every year.
It was a bittersweet visit to Charitable Choice beneficiary charity SPCA (Hong Kong). Sweet because SPCA (Hong Kong) is a wonderful organisation that provides essential services to the Hong Kong community but bitter to learn about the large number of animal neglect & cruelty cases and surrendered pets requiring re-homing. Thanks Zoe Mo and Linda Lam for hosting me.
What I learned
- SPCA (Hong Kong) is Hong Kong's #1 animal welfare organisation with expenditure of over $100 million each year
- SPCA (Hong Kong) is almost completely funded by generous private donors with only 1% government funding
- The charity operates 8 centres around Hong Kong with a new Tsing Yi centre recently opened to provide a larger and better space for rescued animals
What they do
- SPCA (Hong Kong) provides a range of animal welfare services to about 16,000 animals each year
- Their free inspector service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond to animal cruelty cases and injured wild and stray animals. (Interesting fact - inspectors collect injured baby birds and collaborate with Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden for treatment!)
- SPCA (Hong Kong) offers a boarding facility for people who travel and need a place for their pets to stay
What they need
- Donations to support their valuable work. Any amount welcome - donate here!
- Visit and support their new state-of-the-art centre at Tsing Yi (corporate volunteer & school programmes available)
- Support their Inspector Fund here
