KELY Support Group - preventing youth suicide

It was alarming to learn that there are 3 youth suicides in Hong Kong each week, triple the number from a few years ago. Charitable Choice beneficiary charity KELY Support Group helps local youth by providing services that support teen mental health and drug & alcohol prevention. Thank you June Lun, Godi Li and Megan Lam for hosting me during my recent visit.

What I learned
  • Suicide rates among youth have increased after the pandemic
  • KELY Support Group has specialised in services and workshops for teenagers since their inception 32 years ago
  • KELY Support Group is the only provider of English drug & alcohol prevention workshops in HK schools

What they do
  • KELY Support Group provides English and Chinese school workshops on teen mental health and drug & alcohol prevention
  • The charity also offers corporate lunch and learns for parents
  • More recently they have developed a Peer Support training programme (Talk to Me) to teach teens to identify signs and support peers in times of distress
  • To increase awareness KELY Support Group is developing a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum for schools as well as teacher training

What they need
  • Greater awareness of youth mental health issues
  • Corporates to organise lunch and learns for parents in their office
  • Sponsors for SEL workshops and Talk to Me Peer Support programme at local schools
  • Participants and sponsors for the annual Weez Walk for youth mental health taking place in Jan to Feb 2025. More details here and below.
