24-hour multilingual suicide prevention and emotional support hotline
What They Do
The Samaritans is a non-profit, non-religious organization giving confidential emotional support to people who are suicidal or are in emotional distress, regardless of age, creed, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.
In 2014, we observed an increase of 7.31% and 38.35% in our hotline and e-mail service, respectively than the year before. Our services are provided by over 110 trained volunteers throughout the year 24/7.
Established in 1974, The Samaritans is a volunteer-driven, independent, non-religious charity providing unconditional emotion support to those in distress that may also lead to suicide.
Our 24/7 multilingual telephone hotline provides non-judgemental unconditional emotional support. All calls are answered by our team of volunteers who receive rigorous training in advance on empathic listening skills and other necessary skills to give our callers a consistently high standard of service. For those who prefer writing to talking a Befriending email service is also available.
Additionally, a range of outreach programmes is provided as preventive measures to combat suicide along with a support group for those bereaved by suicide.
